About David
I am an environmental scientist (environmental geochemist) who has had a lifelong professional involvement with the mining and energy industries. The first 16y of my career was spent in Sydney in the CSIRO Division of Coal and Energy Technology. That time gave me a broad appreciation of the issues involved with coal mining and coal-fired power generation. Between 1997 and 2005 I was employed by Energy Resources of Australia (part of the Rio Tinto Group) in Darwin focusing on the management of environmental issues associated with the Ranger uranium mine. This experience gave me a good understanding of the issues involved with the nuclear fuel cycle for power generation. Between 2005 and 2012 I worked in the Commonwealth Department of the Environment in the Supervising Scientist Division based in Darwin leading a diverse team of scientists overseeing the protection of Kakadu Park from the impacts of uranium mining and other activities. During this period I assisted with implementing the expansion of the EPBC Act to include the impacts of large coal mines and coal seam gas on water resources. In 2012 I established my own consulting company – DR Jones Environmental Excellence. In 2013 and 2014 I was the independent scientific advisor to the National Risk assessment of chemicals used in the extraction of coal seam gas, that was set up by the Department of the Environment. Between 2016 and 2018 I was a member of the Independent Scientific Enquiry (the Pepper inquiry) into the potential use of hydraulic fracturing for the extraction of deep shale gas in the Northern Territory.
I have become increasingly concerned that the big picture issues involved with the energy transition are not being clearly communicated by our leaders and other sectorial interests. That is why I have started this Blog.
